Friday 16th July was a perfect sunny day for a Joan Downing's 100th birthday celebration. Balloons, banners and a gazebo appeared at her house.  Friends from Westfield Ccommunity Association gathered on Joan’s front lawn to help her celebrate, numbers necessarily limited due to Covid restrictions. Joan’s daughter and son were also able to be with her, with some younger family members, and another daughter rang from her home in Texas during the party. Children from Westfield School sang some songs, ending with a rousing ‘Happy Birthday’. Hamish Monro (Parish Council) and Annie Nijhuis (WCA) said a few words and presented Joan with gifts. Joan cut the wonderful celebration cake made by Sally Cruttenden and iced so beautifully by one of her Guide leaders. Cake was distributed and glasses filled with bubbly for a toast to Joan.

Joan would like to thank everyone for all the messages, cards and gifts.  She had thought that someone from the village might remember her birthday, but had no idea of what was to come.  What a wonderful day!  Thank you also to Pauline, who masterminded everything.
