18 September 2017: John Cornford Memorial Cup

This match is played each year between Westfield CC and Sedlescombe CC in memory of John Cornford who was a well known and respected local cricketer and was associated with both teams.

Westfield CC retained the cup yesterday (Sun 17th September) in an excellent match with some more milestones for the club being achieved.

Our second Colt, Zach Turner, played his first adult game and contributed well to the win. Zac is the step-son of Darren Corke who scored an excellent undefeated 114 runs as well as taking 2 wickets for 20 runs and not to be outdone Graham Corke, who is Darren’s father, took 4 wkts for 36 runs---an excellent family contribution. Also congratulations to Graham who has been selected to tour Australia early next year as a member of the ECB Senior side----an international who is a member of Westfield CC !!!

Skipper, Peter Baker, scored 60 runs and retired so that young Zach would have the opportunity to bat in his first adult game. In the process of scoring his runs Peter passed 1,000 runs for the season which is an amazing feat at any level of cricket so huge congratulations to him.

The scores were:- Sedlescombe CC 206 runs all out

Westfield CC 211 runs for 4 wickets

This was the last competitive home game of the season and next week we are holding an end of season fun cricket day with our All Stars, Colts and Senior Players enjoying some fun cricket among themselves and parents so Mums and Dads will be joining in. Patrick will also be providing a BBQ so can everybody please keep everything crossed so that we get some good weather!

                           WESTFIELD C.C. ---Colts 10 September 2017

The starting of a Colts section this season to develop young cricketers as the future of WCC is beginning to pay off as we had our first Colt, Milo Stratford, playing in a friendly match today against Mountfield CC and we also have three more youngsters waiting to play their part in the future of the cricket club—Zach Turner, Zach Currie and Shae Walsh.

It is always daunting playing your first senior game of cricket and Milo played his part on the winning side including 2 wkts for 8 runs (WCC won by 94 runs) so well done to Milo and we hope to see more good things from you and the other Colts next year and going forward especially now we have two sides in the East Sussex League starting next season.

WESTFIELD C.C. - League Update 2017

Congratulations to Peter Baker (Captain) and his team who finished our league season last Saturday (27th August) with a comprehensive and important win over closest rivals Kerala Strikers.

We are top of division 9. However, Kerala Strikers still have one more game to play next Saturday and if they win then they will take over as leaders of the division and we will finish in a creditable 2nd place. By finishing in 2nd place we are still guaranteed promotion again, and will play in division 8 next season. However this may change as ESCL are currently reviewing their league structure for next season, but we will still be playing at a higher level.

After 224 years of playing friendly matches the decision was made to enter a side into the East Sussex Cricket League, and we started in division 12 which is the lowest division so our progress has been excellent given that we will be in division 8 next season.

Congratulations must also go to the background members for all of their hard work and support throughout the season, especially David (Leggy) Legg and his trusty helpers for providing the best wickets in the division, if not the county, every week.

It is testament to players and members that we were undefeated at home this season in the league and only lost early season friendly games when we were testing ourselves against higher level opposition.

We still have a programme of 6 friendly games before the end of the season, please check on our fixture list - the game against Sedlescombe CC is played for each year in memory of John Cornford who was well known to both teams.

March 2017:  Westfield Cricket Club  JUNIOR CRICKET

Westfield C.C. are embarking on two initiatives to get young people playing cricket at the same time making sure that cricket thrives and survives in the village. Cricket has been played in Westfield since 1790.

With the newly formed Junior section starting on Monday 10th April the Club provides opportunities for young people between the ages of 7 and 17 to receive coaching and competition in cricket. This is the culmination of a successful year of co-operation between Westfield School, Sussex Cricket Foundation and Westfield CC. All coaching is by qualified coaches who are trained and have been screened for their suitability for working with young people. We have also joined EACA Under 11 Softball League to give the young people the experience of competition.

ECB have recently launched a new initiative for 5 to 8 year olds called All Stars and Westfield CC have joined this initiative to further enhance our Junior section. Again this is in co-operation with Westfield School and Sussex Cricket Foundation who are running the scheme on behalf of ECB.

If you have children who would be interested in joining the Junior section initiative then please contact any of the Westfield CC committee members listed below and they will let you have a form to register them for the Junior section.

If you have children who would be interested in joining the All Stars initiative then you can register them on line at www.allstarscricket.co.uk or, as above, contact any of the Westfield CC committee members listed below.

We welcome parents to all training and competitions and value your support. We are keen to try and involve parents in the club so if you would like to be involved with our Club generally please introduce yourself to a Coach or *Committee Member.

Coaching sessions for Juniors will take place on Monday evenings between the times of 5.00 pm and 6.00 pm, by our very experienced coach Trevor Ramsden, at The Cricket Ground, Downoak Farm, Westfield TN35 4SL, starting on Monday 10th April 2017.

Coaching sessions for All Stars will take place on Sunday mornings between the times of 10.00 am and 11.00 am by Adam (Spud) Page at The Cricket Ground, Downoak Farm, Westfield TN35 4SL, starting on Sunday 21st May

If you would like to talk to someone at the club about this information or your child’s involvement with the club please contact the *Coach or a *Committee Member.

January 2017    Junior / School Update

  • Sussex Cricket Foundation started “free” coaching sessions on Wednesday 11th January 2017 with by 14 pupils, and these will continue every Wednesday for 20 weeks.  These sessions will be run as an after school club. From these sessions we hope to recruit juniors for our new junior section starting in the 2017 season, and will need to get their parents / guardians to complete the children’s personal detail forms and give their approval to join Westfield CC.  This will be an on-going process but if a junior, or their parent, would like to receive the form please contact Ian Taylor (see contact details below) The form can be e-mailed if preferred.
  • To launch the Sussex Cricket Foundation sessions Sid the Shark attended the school assembly on Monday 9th January 2017 with Natasha Newman (SCF) and it was a very enjoyable session for all.

Juniors

  • We have arranged a cricket coach to start the coaching of our junior section for 2017 with schedule details currently being finalised. These will be advertised soon.
  • We would also like to find a couple more coaches to assist the coach and also anybody that would like to be involved with the running of the junior section. DBS checks will be necessary for such roles. Any parent / guardian or local resident who would like to be involved please contact Ian Taylor, Dave Legg or Kevin Baker (see contact details below). Westfield CC will arrange to pay for any necessary course fees and organise the DBS checks (originally CRB).
  • The junior section will be open to any juniors, of either sex, who wish to come along and play and not just from Westfield school so please pass on contact information to any family or friends that you think would be interested.

WESTFIELD C.C. –-2016 Season ( Winter Update)

It was a challenging season, in the middle, but we were successful in gaining promotion to Division 9 for the 2017 season as well as winning the John Cornford Memorial Trophy from our friends and local rivals Sedlescombe C.C. We were also joint runners-up in the Busbridge Bash T20 competition, and had another enjoyable tour of Hampshire and Dorset in July.

The “playing” season ended with our AGM which was held at The New Inn on 21st November with all officers and committee members being re-elected, with the exception of David Affleck who stood down as Treasurer having been in post for 50 years, so a big thank you to David.   His replacement in this role is Rory Hunt and we wish him well. (For details on the committee please go to our website—www.westfieldsussex.play-cricket.com and click on the “About Us” tab on the task bar, then click on “officials”

The “off-season” continues to be busy with excellent progress being made by the joint Parish Council and Cricket Club working party on the new cricket pavilion development. In addition, the beginning of a “junior” section from the 2017 season is well advanced. Sussex Cricket Foundation are starting 20 weeks of after school coaching sessions at Westfield School on Wednesday 11th January, and it will all “kick off” with a visit from Sid the Shark to the school assembly on Monday 9th January. The Cricket Club will start to coach at our ground with our own coach from Spring 2017, and we will give regular updates in the new year as we firm up days and times. If any young person and/ or parent would like to know more please contact any club official or committee member. The “junior” section will be open to boys and girls, and will not be restricted to children from Westfield School.

We are always keen to have more players, members and voluntary helpers. Westfield C.C is a friendly club giving excellent value for money with membership fees just £1 per annum, so please come along and get involved.

Previous news from October 2016 .......

On the field of play it has been a busy and successful season for the club with promotion in Division 10 by finishing as runners up, finishing joint second in The Busbridge Bash T20 league, winning the John Cornford Memorial Trophy and we played a lot of friendly games with mixed success. In his first season as captain Peter Baker led from the front and was ably supported by Alvin Atkins, who took over as vice-captain half way through the season, and the other players who turned out regularly. The weather was kind to us with little disruption from rain and, as has become the norm, the grounds have been kept immaculate by Dave Legg and his helpers - we have one of the best batting tracks in the league, and certainly one of the most picturesque grounds.

The season came to an end with our Annual Awards Dinner at The New Inn on 9th October, an event that was well supported and enjoyed by all, so thanks to Patrick and his team for hosting the event and providing excellent fare.

Awards

League:  Peter Baker (most runs),  Rob Ledsham ( best batting average)

Alvin Atkins  (most wkts),  Rob Ledsham ( best bowling average)

Peter Baker ( most outfield catches)

T20:         Jack Stapley (most runs),  Curtis Coombes (most wickets)

Friendlies:  Peter Baker (most runs), Rory Hunt (most wickets)

 Players Player:  Peter Baker

 Club Person: Ian Taylor

Life Membership Certs:  David Affleck, David Legg, David Thomas and Graham Corke.

In addition all 21 players who helped gain promotion in the league were awarded runners up medals.

It has been a busy season off the field as well with the beginning of a “junior” section from the 2017 season. We kicked this off with an open day at Westfield School supported by Waitrose and Sussex Cricket Foundation who provided free coaching to 172 children throughout the day.  From there 21 children were chosen to attend summer training at Horntye given by Sussex Cricket Foundation.  On the back of this we have an official partnership agreement with Westfield School to promote junior cricket both at the school and our club, and we have been holding skills training at the school once a week at lunchtimes to maintain interest. Sussex Cricket Foundation will be continuing their involvement with free coaching at after school clubs starting on Wednesday 11th January 2017 and every Wednesday thereafter for 20 weeks. This will give a sound base for use to start our junior section next season with our own coaching sessions. The junior section will also be open to any local children who would like to come along to learn how to play cricket and hopefully form a team/s.

We raised sufficient grants to purchase a defibrillator early in the season which we feel is a very important addition to our equipment and we take it to all games home or away.  Fortunately we didn’t have to use it this season!

We have also been busy investigating the prospect of building a long overdue new pavilion and are pleased to say that, with Westfield Parish Council backing, we are progressing well with this project, so watch this space!
