WESTFIELD C.C. - 2016 Season
On the field of play it has been a busy and successful season for the club with promotion in Division 10 by finishing as runners up, finishing joint second in The Busbridge Bash T20 league, winning the John Cornford Memorial Trophy and we played a lot of friendly games with mixed success. In his first season as captain Peter Baker led from the front and was ably supported by Alvin Atkins, who took over as vice-captain half way through the season, and the other players who turned out regularly. The weather was kind to us with little disruption from rain and, as has become the norm, the grounds have been kept immaculate by Dave Legg and his helpers - we have one of the best batting tracks in the league, and certainly one of the most picturesque grounds.
The season came to an end with our Annual Awards Dinner at The New Inn on 9th October, an event that was well supported and enjoyed by all, so thanks to Patrick and his team for hosting the event and providing excellent fare.

In addition all 21 players who helped gain promotion in the league were awarded runners up medals.
It has been a busy season off the field as well with the beginning of a “junior” section from the 2017 season. We kicked this off with an open day at Westfield School supported by Waitrose and Sussex Cricket Foundation who provided free coaching to 172 children throughout the day. From there 21 children were chosen to attend summer training at Horntye given by Sussex Cricket Foundation. On the back of this we have an official partnership agreement with Westfield School to promote junior cricket both at the school and our club, and we have been holding skills training at the school once a week at lunchtimes to maintain interest. Sussex Cricket Foundation will be continuing their involvement with free coaching at after school clubs starting on Wednesday 11th January 2017 and every Wednesday thereafter for 20 weeks. This will give a sound base for use to start our junior section next season with our own coaching sessions. The junior section will also be open to any local children who would like to come along to learn how to play cricket and hopefully form a team/s.
We raised sufficient grants to purchase a defibrillator early in the season which we feel is a very important addition to our equipment and we take it to all games home or away. Fortunately we didn’t have to use it this season!
We have also been busy investigating the prospect of building a long overdue new pavilion and are pleased to say that, with Westfield Parish Council backing, we are progressing well with this project, so watch this space!
Sussex Police have issued the following notice:
Over the past couple of weeks we have across Rother seen an increase to burglaries in the home and to out buildings such as garages and sheds. With the nights starting to become darker earlier we are at risk of these incidents increasing. I have attached a couple of documents to my email offering a guide on how you can make your homes, garages etc. less of a risk. Please take a look through them and see if there is anything you can do to minimise the risk.

Bicycle Crime Prevention
Bicycles can be some of the easiest vehicles for thieves and vandals to target. Protect yourself from becoming a victim by following some simple steps:
• Get a good bike lock
• Lock your bike to something secure, even if only for a few minutes and avoid isolated places - leave your bike where a potential thief can be seen
• Lock up removable parts (e.g. wheels) and take light fittings with you
• Have your bike's frame security-marked or engraved
• Take a clear colour photograph of your bike and make a written record of its serial number, description, including any unique features.
• At home, keep your bike in a secure garage or shed and keep the door locked
